What I Would Buy for My Family: Hospital Beds

What I Would Buy for My Family: Hospital Beds

Posted by Rebecca Coughlin, Home Mobility Equipment Expert on Nov 13th 2024

Family is everything, and all the products sold at CVI Medical are items I would use myself or recommend to a loved one. For the past five years I have ordered all the items sold at CVI Medical and researched countless beds on the market with different features, prices, and warranties, then narrowed the selection down to the best beds in the industry made by manufacturers who I trust and are proud of their products. When it comes to home hospital beds, there are two beds I would consider based on my family members’ needs: the Joerns EasyCare Hospital Bed and the Dawn House Hospital Bed Alternative.

Joerns EasyCare Hospital Bed

Joerns EasyCare Hospital Bed

The Joerns EasyCare Hospital Bed would be my first choice if my family member needed a lot of care. It is the best home hospital bed on the market with every feature you could need and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. Having all the standard functions of a full electric hospital bed where the head, legs, and height of the bed raise up and down by use of a hand control, the EasyCare also has the option to add staff controls on the foot-end bed panel that will allow caregivers to adjust the bed without searching for the hand control. The EasyCare Bed goes even further with the advanced positioning of Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, and a seated chair position. This is so important if someone is bedbound to help with circulation as well as give them a bit of normalcy by sitting in an upright chair position.

Raise and Lower

Another great reason to love this bed is because the bed will raise up to 36 inches high with the mattress and lower the base of the bed to 7 inches from the floor. This is incredibly important for caregivers. The higher the bed can reach, the less strain caregivers have on their backs. Additionally, if someone is a fall risk out of the bed, the ability to lower the bed base to be 7 inches from the floor helps prevent bad falls and peace of mind to the caregiver even when rails are in place.

If I haven’t sold you yet, the bed can be built with integrated width, taking the bed from 36inches, to 39 inches, to 42 inches wide. This bed can also be extended to 84 inches long. This is the only bed I know that will accommodate someone who wants an 84 inch long bed and 42 inches wide.

Looks

Now for looks. The EasyCare Bed has elevated panels that are pressed wood of different colors so you can choose which shade best matches your existing furniture. I believe when paired with sheets and a comforter, this bed looks far better in a room than a basic full electric bed and still gives all the medical benefits and more.

Bed Rails

Another reason why I love the EasyCare bed is their choice in bed rails. My favorite is the Deluxe Assist handle because it is molded plastic instead of metal, with two different arm grips for repositioning and getting out of bed. The rail is only a quarter of the length from a traditional half rail so it feels less confining to the person in the bed but still give a bit of rail security. Additionally, the molded plastic is softer and not cold like metal. If someone needs more of a rail to assist keeping someone in the bed, the best option is the SoftCare Deluxe Assist Device which are half rails made in molded plastic. You can double the rails up to have half rails at the top and feet section to act like a full-length bedrail.

Hospital Bed Mattress

As far as mattresses go, I would choose the Medline Advantage Contour 4.4 Mattress for the 4 anatomical zones for optimal comfort for their head, shoulder, torso and heel. The different densities of foam help create the most comfortable mattress to redistribute pressure along the body.

The best part about this bed is its ability to adapt to the person’s needs. The bed frame is already equipped with everything a loved one could ever need medically. Should someone’s need for a mattress change, the hospital bed can accommodate gel overlays and low air loss mattresses. Furthermore, the bed has clearance underneath should someone need a patient lift or overbed table. The EasyCare Hospital Bed is a nice-looking home hospital bed that will fit every one of their needs.

The Dawn House Hospital Bed

When it comes to needing a hospital bed but wanting a beautiful bed you would typically have in your home, look no further than the Dawn House Bed. The bed is the epitome of luxury and comfort with a platform base and tall padded headboard. Choose between Slate and Ivory to best match your furniture. This bed is perfect for those who need the functionality of a hospital bed but the appearance of a typical bed in your home.

Hospital Bed Alternative

The Dawn House Bed is a hospital bed alternative, meaning it will raise and lower the leg and head section of the bed and move the height of the mattress up and down to ease transferring in and out. Most adjustable beds on the market, like SleepNumber, do not raise and lower the height of a bed up and down from the floor. The Dawn House Bed is by far the most comfortable bed I have tried, I could lay in the zero-gravity positioning all day long! The bed comes with a cord-free hand control where you can program the positioning best for you. I love that there is an ‘In’ and ‘Out’ button to program the bed for easy transferring. Save a ‘Read’ and ‘Snore’ positioning too!

Bed Sizing

You can choose the size of bed you want: twin long, full, queen, king and split king. I cannot emphasize enough how much people love the split king bed so you can continue to sleep with your partner. For the first time, I am aware of, partners can share their bed while getting all the features, and more, of a fully electric home hospital bed!

More Features

The bed is packed with features including underbed lighting, massage, anti-snoring feature, rise to wake, and health monitoring. The non-contact sensors connect biometric data to the Dawn House App with personalized reporting to monitor your heart rate, snoring, respiration, total hours slept, and more! This information can be so helpful, not just to the user, but for their loved ones to help ensure the person is healthy or catch anything before it worsens.

App

The Dawn House App will display your tracked data, functions as a remote, and will program your most comfortable positions and features. The ‘Rise to Wake’ and ‘Rest & Unwind’ features are two of my favorites! Choose which time you would like to wake up in the morning and the bed will gently elevate your head to ease you awake. Similarly, the Rest & Unwind routine can be set and enable the Anti-Snore auto bed correction where the bed raises approximately 12 degrees in response to snoring caused by body positioning.

Voice Console

Additionally, the Dawn House Bed comes equipped with a voice console which enables the bed to be controlled using simple voice commands. The console doubles as a wireless charging station for your phone.

If all of these features seem overwhelming to you, they are simply available if you want to use them. Otherwise, the bed operates with the easy to read hand control with large spaced out buttons.

Patient Lift Question

As much as I love the Dawn House Bed, a key determining factor in whether this bed is right for you, or a loved one, is if you need the assistance of a patient lift. There is no underbed clearance with the Dawn House Bed and so any equipment that requires maneuvering under the bed is not possible with the Dawn House. Should you or your loved one not require patient lifts, I believe this is the best bed for aging with comfort and style. We had a customer share that they are purchasing the Dawn House Bed because their mother needs a hospital bed temporarily, but they will continue to use the Dawn House bed as the main bed in the guest room – that is of course if their mother doesn’t insist on the bed moving back home with her!

Wrap Up

To simplify things, if me or my loved one needed a height adjustable bed and had minimal health issues, I would choose the Dawn House Bed every time. However, if health issues were more acute, the EasyCare Hospital Bed is the best option. You can adjust the bed to fit any health need and there is no better bed on the market.

Budgeting

Medline Full Electric Hospital Bed Medline Full Electric CVI MedicalThe EasyCare and Dawn House beds are more expensive beds and I always try to be conscious of our customers’ budgets while ensuring they receive the best quality items.

If I were on a strict budget, I would buy the Medline Full Electric Hospital Bed with the Advanced Contour Mattress (mentioned above) and the Stander EZ Click Bed Handle (see below).

I believe it is important to have a full electric hospital bed over a semi-electric where a caregiver must use a crank to adjust the height of a bed. The full electric hospital bed is completely operated by the hand control. We carry several brands of hospital beds including Medline, Drive, and Dalton. All these beds are great, and we order from each manufacturer.

Bed Handle

The EZ Click Bed Handle is my choice for railing because they are less confining than typical hospital bedrails, they can be removed with an easy click of a button on the handle, and someone can pull on the rails to reposition themselves. Traditional bedrails can easily brake when pulled on since their only function is to help keep someone in the bed.
